Arthur Verocai @ Thalia Hall
Presented by L.A. collective Jazz Is Dead, Brazilian folk-jazz composer, arranger, conductor Arthur Verocai comes to Chicago to perform his self titled album at Thalia Hall. Released in 1972 when the Brazilian government limited creative expression, his album did not gain much recognition. However, his sound embracing pop, soul and jazz won over listeners in the US and Europe over the decades, with his music being sampled by artists like Ludacris, MF Doom and others. Come hear Verocai’s deep-groove arrangements with sweeping orchestral psych-funk elements performed with a live orchestra!

The Virginian
I’ll be underscoring City Lit Theatre’s production of The Virginian. A novel by Owen Wister from 1902 that originated the archetype of the American cowboy. Never named, rough-hewn but soft-spoken, living on the frontier between nature and civilization, the Virginian pursues his own singular code of honor. On a ranch near Bear Creek, Wyoming, the cowpuncher from Virginia struggles to uphold this code in conflict with his deadly enemy, a former ranch hand turned rustler, as well as in his courting of the fiercely independent schoolmarm, whose own personal code is as strong as his. City Lit’s adaptation will feature an amazing cast and puppeteers roping you into to this Western story!

Circuit des Yuex at Thalia Hall
Circuit des Yeux, led by Haley Fohr reflects from a singular angle, looking deeply, at times unblinkingly, at connections and collisions of the cerebral and the physical, with a sense of colloquial grit and an equally opaque transcendent spirit in her words and her music.
Circuit des Yeux has received enervated and affirmative commentary from The Quietus, NPR, New York Times, Chicago Reader, Brooklyn Rail, Pitchfork and The Wire, among many others. They have all made interesting speculations on her brand of entertainment. All we can tell you in addition is that she has a 4-octave range - at least on days when it isn’t raining.
Doors open @ 7:30p

Putnum County Spelling Bee: The Musical
Part of Timber Lake Playhouse’s 2021 theater season:
An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
